District Sandcastle Competition – Postponed until 05/09/19

Date: 8th Jul 2019 Author: Chris Ball

It is with great regret that we are going to have to postpone this year’s District Sandcastle competition to Thursday 5th September 2019. This is due to the mud which has appeared all along Burnham-on-Sea Beach including the area we normally hold the competition. We have looked all along Burnham Beach and there is not an area large enough to hold the competition without having to walk through mud to access it. I spoke with the Coastguard and they explained that they have had some of their vehicles stuck in the mud recently and there are places which people could get stuck in. This is a risk we are not prepared to take.

We have explored the options of relocating to Berrow or Brean Beach, however the road to Brean Beach is single carriageway in places so with over 200 cars trying to access it at once, this is not feasible. Berrow Beach has an on beach car park, however this closes at 8pm and we have been unable to liaise with the council about extending this in such a short time scale.

Unfortunately none of the Tuesday evenings in September have suitable tide times, and as we don’t want to leave it any later in the year due to light and weather conditions we have chosen Thursday 5th September as the new date. I will send a new OSM event out to you all in the next week or so with all the details.

I cannot apologise enough for having to postpone the event, however the safety of the young people and leaders is as always our number one priority.

If you have any questions or feedback please don’t hesitate to email me.
